Descriptions

To lead and manage the credit underwriting function by ensuring comprehensive credit assessments, sound risk analysis, accurate appraisal of borrowers, and high-quality credit recommendations. The role ensures prudent lending decisions that align with the bank’s credit policies, risk appetite, regulatory expectations, and strategic objectives.

Responsibilities

Credit Assessment & Appraisal Oversight
  • Lead the end-to-end credit appraisal process for all customer segments (Retail, SME, Corporate, Agri, Trade Finance).
  • Ensure thorough analysis of financial statements, cash flows, projections, collateral, and repayment capacity.
  • Review and validate credit proposals prepared by Analysts to ensure quality and completeness.
  • Provide independent, objective credit opinions aligned with the bank’s risk appetite.


Credit Risk Analysis

  • Assess business, financial, operational, industry, and collateral risks for each credit application.
  • Determine risk ratings, exposure limits, and recommend appropriate lending structures.
  • Identify early warning signals and ensure proactive risk mitigation actions.
  • Recommend risk-appropriate pricing based on borrower risk profile, facility type, and cost of risk.


Credit Approval & Recommendation

  • Prepare high-quality credit recommendation memos for submission to the Credit Committee or approval authorities.
  • Ensure all facility requests comply with credit policy, underwriting standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance to Relationship Managers on structuring and documentation of credit facilities.
  • Highlight deviations and provide clear justification when exceptions are recommended.


 Portfolio Quality Assurance

  • Support portfolio monitoring by identifying deteriorating accounts during underwriting reviews.
  • Analyze trends in approved credits, sectors, and risk concentrations to support risk mitigation.
  • Participate in periodic reviews of loan books for quality, performance, and risk alignment.
  • Drive corrective actions and feedback to improve risk management and portfolio quality.


 Policy, Processes & Governance

  • Contribute to updating credit policies, underwriting standards, sectoral lending guidelines, and delegated authorities.
  • Ensure underwriting practices align with BOT regulations, IFRS requirements, and internal risk frameworks.
  • Ensure documentation of underwriting decisions is clear, consistent, and auditable.
  • Support internal/external audits and ensure closure of audit observations related to underwriting.


 Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with Relationship Managers, Credit Administration, Risk, Legal, and Finance.
  • Provide advisory support to business teams regarding customer structuring, risk mitigation, and credit solutions.
  • Engage sector experts, valuers, and external parties where additional insights are required.


Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Credit Analysts and other underwriting staff.
  • Ensure high-quality output, timely assessments, and adherence to turnaround time (TAT) benchmarks.
  • Build capacity in financial analysis, risk assessment, sector-specific knowledge, and writing of credit proposals.
  • Foster high performance and a culture of credit discipline and analytical excellence.


Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Quality of credit proposals and recommendations

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Professional certifications (CPA, ACCA, CFA, CRM, or Credit Management Certification) are an added advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in credit analysis, underwriting, lending, or credit risk roles.
  • Strong experience in assessing SME, Corporate, Retail, and/or Agricultural credit.
  • Deep understanding of financial analysis, credit modelling, collateral evaluation, and sector dynamics.
